Initial testing was good, but some images appeared very soft when they shouldn't be. After digging through some forums and reading up a lot, I found this lens has a vibration issue that causes a "double image". Some people attributed it to the OIS (stabilization) but that is not the case.
I did some test photos with the shutter speed between 1/60th and 1/200th second. I know this isn't a safe shutter speed for the long end of the telephoto but you can tell the difference between motion blur and the double image problem. Taking 18 photos, at least 10 of them showed the double image. I took another 18 with OIS on and again 10 or so had the double image.
I'm pretty positive that there is something wrong with the stabilization lens, such that it sometimes vibrates even with OIS off. If I held the extended portion of the lens with my fingers, that seemed to decrease/eliminate the issue.
I could not recommend this lens to anyone until Panasonic fixes the issue and new reports come out of people using and testing it successfully.
I got my 14-42X as part of the GF3 kit. Possibly the newer versions have been fixed, but I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.
If you do buy the lens, please test it by going to shutter mode, setting the shutter speed to 1/60th, OIS off, and take 3 shots of a sign or something with high contrast (lettering is good) from about 10-15 ft away. Then up the shutter speed one notch and shoot 3 more. Keep doing that until you get to 1/200th. Repeat the same procedure with OIS on. Then review the pictures at 100% magnification. If you see the double image around letters, your lens has the problem.

First, the double-image others reported are not due to defective lenses. It has to do with an incompatibility between the 14-42 X PZ and certain models of lightweight cameras, specifically early model Panasonic GX1's, the G3, G2 and a couple GF models. The shutter on these models are a bit too forcefull, and actually shake the floating elements used in the OIS system. Panasonic claims to have fixed the issue in later hardware revisions of the cameras, as well as a firmware update to the lens itself. To see if your model is compatible, it's best to contact Panasonic. In general, larger bodies like the G5, GH2, GH3 will not have these issues. I'm not aware of any problems with Olympus cameras, but don't quote me on that.
The lens itself is a nice kit lens. It's better than the 14-42 lens including in most Panasonic camera kits, and roughly equal to the vaunted 14-45. 14-45 is a bit better on the wide end, 14-42 is better on the long end. Check the MTF charts on Panny's site to see for yourself. It's a great partner to the Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Pancake Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras. You can use the 20mm indoors, keeping the zoom in your pocket, and swap them out when you go outside or need either a wider or closer shot. It's really convenient and low-key 2 piece kit for only $600 (unless you got the 14-42 X in your kit).
As for quality, the center of the lens is tack sharp, it's when you look at the edges and corners do you realize that this is still just a kit zoom. It's not poor, I've printed 20x16 posters that look great on the wall and wallpapers that look great on my desktop. However, pros will notice some blurring and lack of contrast in the off center. Of course, I always want a wider, bright aperture. But what do you expect? It's a pancake kit lens. For that, it's great.

My first compact system camera was a GF1 together with the 14-45 kit lens. Although my first lens showed some decentring to the right side, I exchanged it for another one and was really happy with the results. This lens was very sharp through the whole zoom range, but it was painfully big at the same time. It was hardly smaller than the usual APS-C DSLR kit-lenses from Canon Nikon etc. All the size-advantage of the mirrorless MicroFourThirds System just vanished. Of course i was happy when putting the 20mm pancake on my GF1, but sometimes I wanted just a bit more reach, without the need for superbright lenses, just a nice universal walkaround lens.
Then Olympus came out with their vision of a collapsible kitzoom when introducing the E-P1 together with the M.Zuiko 14-42. I was full of envy to see this nice small lens. Although it received lots of criticism due to wobbly construction and slow autofocus, nevertheless it was aiming in the right direction. Even Samsung "borrowed" the collapsible design for their NX 20-50 lens, while Panasonic came later with their "cheap" version of the old 14-45 namely the 14-42 which was even bigger than the previous 14-45. I lost any hope for something special from Panasonic until they announced the new x PZ 14-42 lens last year, which was nearly half as small as the already compact M.Zuiko, but with powerzoom and automatic extension and some nice features like step-zoom, zoom resume etc. They even claimed the new lens to perform better than the already perfect 14-45. Meanwhile i got rid of my 14-45 as i wasn't using it very often. If I really had to carry a big lens, i rather preferred the 14-140.
First of all the x14-42 is really small and light. It is hardly bigger than the 20mm pancake and at the same time even lighter. The lens-cap is small and thin and it doesn't add a lot of length to the overall design unlike the usual lens-caps which rather made the lenses even longer and bulkier. The x14-42 doesn't feel cheap by any means but it does rattle a bit if in standby-mode, which is probably due to the moving OIS-element. When turned on it extends automatically pretty quickly, and you can shoot away directly without any delay. Zooming is accomplished by the dedicated zoom-lever. Some might argue that they prefer a manual focus-ring, but in such a case and because the lens is so small, i don't see this as a handicap. On the contrary, the powerzoom allows you for constant zooming during filming. I sometimes tried to zoom during filming with my 14-45 and it always ended in some jerky movement.
The zoom-lever provides 2 speeds, if you press it stronger zoom speed increases. You can also define 3 different zoom-speeds in the additional zoomlens menu, in case you got a newer Lumix camera like the GF2, GF3, or GH2 etc. For older models like GF1, G1, GH1 Panasonic didn't provide any firmwareupdate, so you will miss the focal length display, and all the additional features like step-zoom etc with those cameras.
Compared to other kitlenses the aperture of the x14-42 slows down pretty quickly when you zoom in. At 20mm you will already get f/4.5 maximum aperture, at 25mm f/5.0 and f/5.6 starts from 32mm upwards.
The real problem of the x14-42 is the optical performance. Even at perfect conditions it is not the sharpest lens. It doesn't even come close to the old 14-45 and also my 14-140 is sharper at all focal lenghts when stopped down. The other problem is the already mentioned "bug" that the lens blurs images at particular focal lengths and shutter speed combinations. I had 3 copies of the x14-42 and i was not able to get really sharp images at 42mm with neither of them. Even at higher shutter speeds like 1/1000 there was some irregular behaviour depending if OIS was on or off. With on i got sharp images in the center with soft corners, with OIS disabled the corners sharpened up, but the center became soft.
As it is now I cannot recommend this lens to anyone. I tried contacting Panasonic service in germany, but they claimed to not be aware of this problem at all and advised me to update the Firmware to V1.1, which i already had installed.
It is a real pity that apart from the rather mediocre optical performance the lens also suffers from these some strange blurring-issue. I would accept some slight softness if the lens delivered consistent results, but sometimes you get a blurry picture, while the next one can be sharp, although you didn't change anything. I welcome the idea and courage of Panasonic to bring out something really special and probably the smallest kit-lens available. Therefore the x14-42 gets 2 stars, but because of all the problems the lens is suffering from i would stay away from it until an official statement or fix is available.
