I ordered a few of these for robotics / computer vision experiments, expecting they'd be more or less disposable, given the reviews here and the ultra low price. After putting them through 'heck' (don't want the censors to fine me), over ~60 hours of action each thus far, I haven't seen any sign of the poor performance / fragility others have cautioned against. The trade-offs for the size/form factor should be enormous, and with a $40 price, these trade-offs can't be combatted by throwing money at the manufacturing line. So I'd have expected (and been happy with) a far lower quality product. For comparison, the only similar form factor/ price cam I've seen is the 808 #16. Where that's a fun engineer's toy with lots of modding potential, this is a fully functional action cam suitable for a non-technical person. A few comparisons are in order.
_Versus the great but far more expensive action cams (GoPro, Sony, etc.)_
The relationship between image quality and price-- one measure of value-- mostly follows the usual technology curve. For $400, the GoPro Black is significantly superior. With everything toggled -- protune, the spot meter, one of the >1080P options, etc-- the gopro produces uncanny quality given its size. It has lots of problems too, but it's great at what it does. Dropping from $400 to ~$130-160 (depending on deals and wifi), the Sony HDR-AS10/15, with the latest firmware update, produces excellent video that's sometimes superior but often slightly inferior to the gopro. I don't notice the GoPro pulling away under difficult shooting conditions -- perhaps even the reverse. The GoPro is smaller and has potential to shoot better video; the HDR-AS10/15 is more dependable and will produce better video for a rank amateur. So how does the XS10 stack up?
Under good shooting conditions, the XS10 produces tolerable, if not quite comparable, 720P video vs. either competitor. If it appears to be too good of a value, by quality alone, that's pretty standard for the lower range of technology product (the super cheap computer isn't THAT much slower than the top of the line one that costs 10X). The expected shortcuts were taken. The lens appears to be plastic and doesn't bear the family crest of an ancient lens engineer. But if you're shooting in well lit/not backlit conditions, and you've got the cam pointed in the direction you/it's moving, and you've buffered its movements enough not to miss the missing image stabilization technologies: You'll end up with great looking footage. The tradeoffs become much more noticeable in difficult conditions. No matter how great a value, I wouldn't recommend this cam if you're main use case is: shooting in the dark or with poor lighting, shooting from something that produces lots of vibration or faces perpindicular to your trajectory (if you're moving). You'll miss the better lens, better image processing/compression, and better stabilization of a more expensive cam, so you'll need to pay more.
What makes this feel like such a good value is that it's not only far less expensive, it's also in a different size category than most other action cams. This thing is tiny and light. As of 08/2013, mounting action cams is still generally a pain. Mounting the XS10 is extremely easy. It's roughly 1 inchX1inchX2inches and much of that is the protective shell, (I mean the white body, not the weird plastic exoskeleton, which I would never use). This isn't nearly as substantial (or as precious) as a gopro 3 black, so the mounts and housings aren't really needed (I plan to repurpose them for use with other cams).
If you're not planning to go underwater (I wouldn't recommend this as a diving cam, even if the waterproofing is good, since the lighting challenges would be hard for it), and willing to eschew the orange unigoggle, you can rig the camera pretty much anywhere/anyhow you could figure out to rig a pack of gum. I suggest you take a risk or two. Tape it to a hat or glue a neodymium magnet on it and stick it on anything metallic. Duct tape it to your face. I realize "duct tape it to your face" is not an officially condoned mount and undoubtedly voids the warranty but, again: it's $40, so live a little. In europe, they have ice cream that costs that much.
A few other highlights. The XS10 runs for a long time on a small battery. I consistently get ~2 hours on a full battery at full resolution, given continuous recording, and the battery is a 1X 1.5 X .5 ... doh, I just voided one of the warranties... 400 mah li/ion silver bag, typical of its *cough* pedigree. It seems very sturdy. I've dropped it, without its case, five feet onto linoleum without harming it or interrupting recording. Compares very favorably to the gopro in this regard: my gopro 3 black will often turn itself off under ideal conditions without any outside influences, out of nothing more than ennui. Bottom line for the XS10: A+/*****/Highly Recommend/Many Thumbs.

I think that the video quality and the function of the camera are great for the price, but the record button broke within a month of purchase. I returned the product to amazon, but ordered another with the hope that it was a fluke. I will treat my new camera very gently.... I guess that is what I should expect for $50. I hope that this camera holds up because I have recorded some great hunting and snowboarding video within the short period of time I have owned it.

I bought this camera to record my upcoming snowboarding trips. While I haven't used it on the slopes yet, I have to say this camera is a great budget-minded stand-in for a GoPro or other expensive action cameras! For the money, I am extremely impressed with the video quality; both on HD and the lower resolution settings. The 3mp still shots are pretty good, as well. The waterproof case seems very solid when latched, however I have not yet submerged it. The clip system it uses to attach to the bicycle mount and the elastic head/arm/leg band holds the camera tight (when it is inside the waterproof case or its cellphone style cradle), otherwise you can use the lanyard that comes with it. The bike mount seems a little on the small side for a standard handle bar but does clamp tight. The elastic band has some substance to it and seems to be of a decent quality. Charging time is quick, however I wouldn't mind seeing more than 2 hours (tops) of battery capacity. Then again, for the money (and the size of the camera), I can't really complain. Also, the camera is very easy to operate; two indicator lights and three buttons.
