Note that I also have the Panasonic 20mm and the Nokton 25mm so I'll mention some of their differences.
It's pretty exciting to get hold of the first f/1.4 lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. Thankfully, the Leica brand didn't add a whole lot more to the price tag, although I still think it's a bit pricey.
This lens is like the big brother of the 20mm. It's twice the weight at 200g, and almost twice the height. The construction quality is good, mainly plastic, except for the metal mount. It has a 46mm filter thread - yeah, I can use my 2-stop ND filter from my 20mm lens.
The focusing ring is nicely damp and turns smoothly.
It comes with a carrying pouch and a relatively large plastic rectangular lens hood. You know that 46mm lens hood people are using for the 20mm lens? I'm actually using that instead, very little light fall-off and it's much smaller.
Auto-focus is silent and quick. However, auto-focus during movie mode isn't that fast but it's not just this lens. Manual focus is focus-by-wire and it's a pleasure to focus with the responsive focus ring.
The sharpness varies at different apertures. At f/1.4, the corners are slightly blur, centre sharpness is still alright. f/2.8 is tack sharp at centre, with the subjects at corners nearly in focus. The lens is tack sharp at f/4. I use it often at f/1.4 and the images are perfectly alright, provided you don't pixel-peep.
The depth of field is wonderful. Bokeh is creamy. This lens has a shallower depth of field than the 20mm lens. Even if the subject is near to the background, it can still blur the background effectively (more than the 20mm lens). There's a 3D feel to the photos that are shot this way, together with the background blur is very pleasing. Shooting at f/1.4 during the day would require a ND filter (highly recommended).
At f/1.4, chromatic aberration is barely noticeable, vignetting is slight.
The minor downside is probably the minimum focus distance of 30cm, compared to the 20mm lens' 20cm or the Nokton's 17cm.
Shooting with this lens under low light conditions is, of course, a pleasure. I'm using this outdoors primarily. For indoor shots with intention of capturing interiors, for me, it's 35mm and wider. After using the lens, it made me realise that my preferred focal length is actually 24-35mm.
This lens is pricey. The image quality it delivers is great, thankfully. So it's still good value for money.

Should you get this lens if you already have the 20mm lens?
f/1.4 vs f1/7 is about two thirds stop of a difference. That's minor difference but sometimes matters.
The 20mm is smaller and lighter. The 20mm is wider and more flexible in the sense that you can get the 25mm field of view by just cropping (unless you follow the code of thou-shall-not-crop).
Sure the 25mm lens is sharper, but you can't say that 20mm is far off. The main advantage, at least to me, is the 25mm lens' shallow depth of field, which is the main reason why I bought this.

The Nokton lens is two times heavier, 410g vs 200g. It's also longer, 70mm vs 54.5mm. The build is excellent and looking through all that glass can be mesmerizing (intangible).
The Nokton is a manual focus lens which takes some time getting use to it. Auto-focus is more convenient I must say, seeing that I'm already spoiled by auto-focus.
The aperture ring on this big guy which means you can change your aperture while shooting videos. Manual focus is useful for shooting videos. Using manual focus is generally faster (for video) and you can always be sure you're focusing on the right subject - there's not going to be any auto-focus hunting. Big advantage if you require that change of depth of field from shallow to deep.
For bokeh, both are quite evenly matched.
The Nokton has a 1 stop advantage which can mean the difference of getting or not getting a shot during low light. However, shooting at f/0.95 comes at a cost of a slightly hazy image (some prefer to call it a glow).
I typically use the Nokton at f/1.4. Centre sharpness improves dramatically when stopped here. At deep focus, the corners aren't particularly sharp. This lens just isn't as good at corners. But for my purposes, which involves posting photos to the web, it's not a big issue. If you're printing, then, yes, you should check out more sample images.

The 25MM Lumix Leica lens is a solid prime lens that will give you a "general purpose" lens with superb quality at a fair price.
It's not a wild stretch of the imagination to figure that most people considering this lens are thinking "this one or the 20mm which is cheaper". There's a lot of misguided rationalizations being tossed around here with people saying that the 20mm lens is fine and this lens isn't worth buying if you already have the 20mm, or that f1.4 vs f1.7 isn't worth the ~$200 premium - but you'd be missing the point.
The differences between the 20mm and 25mm lenses isn't merely a few specs. They both have their own distinct characters that they impart onto the pictures you take. The people who can appreciate this are the ones whose pictures you see and say "wow, that's amazing". The people who try to condense these elements into a mere comparison of specs or clump of pixels zoomed in 1600% are missing the point by far.
For reference I am using this lens on a Panasonic GH2 camera.
Optical Quality

The glass used to make this lens and the resulting images it produces are among the best of the best. A lot of people are saying that the Leica name is just stamped on there for marketing purposes, but since the lens is manufactured in Japan that it's not a "true" leica lens. I won't deny that there is a marketing and branding component here, but now that I use this lens and have seen the results it is capable of for myself, I can say it's worthy of that name.
Have you ever seen a picture of a person that seems to tell a story? Well, you can take those kind of pictures with this lens. This lens doesn't just capture sharp detail, it does so in such a way that you can really "feel" the imagery by the way the light blends together with the scene in general. That should clue you into one aspect where this lens excels - taking pictures of people, either portraits or just close/medium distances in general.
Background Blur

The background blur, or as I don't like to call it, bokeh, is very smooth. It's able to make the subject pop without disconnecting it from the background like the 20mm lens does. It is noticeably better than the blur produced with the 20mm lens; it has a very high-end look much like something you'd expect from a Leica lens.
Auto Focus
-------------------
I didn't think the AF with the 20mm lens was slow, but this lens is a lot faster. It's also substantially quieter and more accurate. When shooting video, this lens tracks as well as or better than the 14-140mm HD "video optimized" lens and is just as quiet. The video you get with this lens can be just as dramatic as the still photos - with the right lighting and angles, of course. One of the things that impressed me was this lens' ability to focus quickly even in dim light, where the 20mm lens would be hunting around quite a bit this one just locks on in a few milliseconds.
Manual Focus Ring

The focus ring on this lens is very smooth and you can tell by feel that it is has superior build quality. You can make very subtle adjustments quite easily, and it has just the right amount of resistance to prevent your fingers from bumping it out of focus unintentionally.
Shooting Video

Yes, you can use this as a video lens and yes you will get astounding results. Thanks to its quiet AF, you will not hear any motor noise when playing back your video...and this lens' ability to track accurately and focus quickly is icing on the cake. The lack of zoom forces you to be "in the action" which means you're bound to have a lot of footage that is fun to watch. With my GH2, the 24P mode got a lot more film-like when using this lens. I'm often surprised at the quality I end up with.
Build Quality

The main parts of this lens are made of plastic, but the mount is metal. It DOES include a plastic lens hood which fits on snugly and does not vibrate. The overall quality is very high and despite being made from plastic, it doesn't feel or appear to be cheap at all.
Value

The bottom line is often cited as the main deciding factor for a lot of people, but let's try to look at it from the right perspective. If you are even considering this lens, that indicates to me that you care enough about the pictures you are taking that you feel a particular lens would be worth buying. People often rag on this lens for its price, saying you can get a 50mm for a Nikon for under $200. That may be true, but I can assure you that you won't be taking the kind of pictures with that sub-$200 nikon as you will with this Leica. This isn't just "the f1.4 lens panasonic made for m4/3 users", it's a great lens with a character all its own.
If you can't afford it yet, save up for it. It's not like you need to purchase these on a regular basis - you buy it once and you are able to use it as long as you take care of it. When it comes to prime lenses it's easy to fall into the "one I have is good enough" mentality...but you know it's not true...and you can be certain that you won't be disappointed with the results you get from this lens.

Before reviewing the lens, I would like to comment about the price. First off as of right now this lens is selling for over the 599USD MSRP. Unless you are making a living off the m43 system and need it to make money, I would not say it is worth paying over MSRP. Second, I see a lot of people comparing the price of this lens to Nikon and Canon 50mm lenses. While this lens has a 50mm equivalent crop it is still a 25mm lens and wide lenses are more expensive to make (Additonally, I believe neither of the 50s has aspherical elements while this lens has 2. These elements are far more expensive to make Also, this lens has Nano coating while those don't). Nikon 24mm f/.1.4 - 1999USD Canon 24mm f/1.4 - 1661USD Leica 24mm f/1.4 - 6495USD. While I am not going to claim it is in the same league as those lenses, it is still a very nice lens at a reasonable price.
The only real reason to purchase this lens is to shoot at f/1.4. If you don't plan on doing that then I would recommend the 20mm f/1.7 for less money. The main reason to shoot at f/1.4 is for a shallow depth of field(DOF). Low light is obviously another reason but shallow DOF is the primary. This lens is blindingly sharp in the center. It loses the sharpness in the corner but most of the time I want the corners to either be bokeh or go soft to focus the attention on my subject. The DOF on this lens is roughly 2 stops wider than a 50mm f/1.4 lens on a FX sensor and 1 stop wider than a 35mm f/1.4 on a DX chip. For me this is actually a benefit. I found 50mm f/1.4 on a FX sensor to be so narrow it was hard to get my fast moving children in focus. Also, if I was taking pictures of both of them, if they were even slightly out of plane then one of them was out of focus. With that said, when you could hit that tiny slice the background was beautiful bit of blur. This lens does not quite equal that. This is only really noticeable for a few extremes. To me the extra DOF gets me more keeper photos of my kids. Your milage may vary.
The build quality is the standard Panasonic plastic with a metal bayonet for mounting the lens. It is not a solid metal tank but then again it doesn't weigh as much as one either. I for one appreciate that and it is definitely the way Nikon is moving also. (The 24 f/1.4 listed above is plastic body also). The lens has a Nano coating on it which minimizes ghosting and flares. The one downer is a 7 bladed curved aperture. It is curved so that helps bokeh but in general 9 blades gives a smother background.
Overall this is a great lens and is one of the first a m43 user should get after the kit lens. Here is a nice prime kit that is light and easy to carry around.

This would be a great prime kit for anyone to own and would cover 95% of all shooting situation most of us face.
Compared to Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Pancake Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras - The 20mm is better for most people most of the time. For low light the ½ stop difference would be negligible. The shallower DOF would be the main reason to get the 25mm lens. It is 25mm instead of 20mm so it has a shallower DOF and then it is 1.4 instead of 1.7 so it is shallower still. The 50mm crop is generally better for a 2 person portrait than the 40mm lens. With the 40 you would have to get closer and therefore would induce more perspective effect. The 20mm is smaller and lighter.
Compared toVoigtlander 25mm f/0.95 Nokton Manual Focus Lens for Micro 4/3 Mount - These are really 2 completely different lenses. The 0.95 is really a specialty lens that very few people really need. It is decent for 2 person portraits of people not moving. However, for day-to-day, the 25mm f/1.4 is much more useable for just about everything. It is smaller, lighter, and faster operating than the Voigtlander.
