By Rick Bennette
Not many products this inexpensive deliver so much for the money. And it's even better when you learn how to use the manual controls.
First of all, this is a video camera with stills as an afterthought, so stills are not that good. It's the video that shines here. Even the lens is good for a camera in this price range.
Simply powering up the camera in its default mode will get you a pretty good image in the middle quality AVCHD mode. It has three modes: AVCHD, iFrame and MP4. MP4 mode is only 640x360, so it is not really useful for anything but a quick Facebook video clip. iFrame is 960x540, which is just slightly better than DVD quality; a little better than SD. The AVCHD mode is a full 1920x1080 in all three quality modes, which are measured in data rates of 5, 12 and 17 megabytes per second. The 5 mode is good for shooting scenes with very little motion, like a person giving a speech at a podium. Shoot motion scenes with this mode, and you'll begin to see lots of digital blocking and artifacts in the image, because 5 meg isn't a fast enough data rate to keep up with high motion. The 12 meg mode is beautiful. This is the default mode, and probably will not need to be changed unless you simply enjoy experimenting. The image is crisp and the artifacts are low enough to go unnoticed. At the 17 data rate, there's only an almost imperceptible increase in image quality which most viewers will never notice.
All of the video functions like focus, iris, white balance and shutter speed are set on automatic from the factory. They work well under most conditions. But the beauty is, you can override any or all of them with manual control using the menu. When you learn how to use these controls manually, the image is stunning for a 200 dollar camcorder, even in low light. The color is accurate and the video grain is low.
Most lenses in cameras this cheap will give you unwanted artifacts like chromatic abberation or fuzziness at the corners. This lens eliminates most of that, providing a decent image throughout the optical zoom range. The digital zoom extension is a waste as it is on any camcorder. It's nothing more than a marketing gimmick that I recommend turning off.
Audio quality is pretty good as well, but there are no provisions for connecting an external mike. You can, however, turn the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) on or off, and you can adjust the volume manually. A nice plus on an inexpensive camcorder that isn't found on most cheaper other brand camcorders.
Battery life is less than an hour using the included battery, but luckily you can purchase extended range batteries. There is an HDMI port to view live or played back images, but it goes blank during the actual recording process.
Still images can be recorded at wither 2 or 9 megapixels. Since the image sensor itself is just above 2 megapixels (the exact amount needed for HD video), the 9 megapixel mode uses an interpolation technique to obtain 8.9 megapixel images that are only marginally better than the 2 megapixel mode. Stills in both modes are usable for quick memories, but not good for enlarging.
The camcorder is very small, and the few controls are easy to figure out and use. The record button is thoughtfully positioned where you won't hit it accidentally. In conclusion, this is a perfect little camcorder to shoot memories at home or on vacation.

By Mike
This has been the best camcorder I have ever owned the video quality is excellent and the built in stabilization is superb. For me the controls are easy to manipulate. When you are done shooting pop out the SD card put it into your computer and the files automatically are uploaded. Using your favorite software just make your movie or what ever you want to do. I am very happy with this purchase. I was surprised as to how small the camera is fits securely in the palm of my hand. I would definitely recommend this product.

By C. Trent
It's missing a few features, other Panasonic cameras Ive owned have had Optical Image Stabilization, this one is only digital. DIS often cuts down the resolution like a digital zoom so I will just leave it off.
The other thing is the extremely small battery, less capacity than most cell phones and does not even fill the battery well in the camera, it was obviously was designed for a larger battery. The manual states it has an average recording time of only 40 minutes. Thankfully Panasonic does not use chips in their batteries (unlike some JVC's I own), I purchased a 3rd party battery for about 60% less than Panasonic's battery with 3 times the capacity. Also, it does not come with an external charger, it only charges while the camera is plugged in. I would recommend an external charger if you have multiple batteries.
The video settings are slightly strange, other cameras I have record in standard sizes like 480,720 & 1080. The other sizes are 960 x 540 and 640 x 360. If you want small clips that upload quick to facebook maybe, but for real recording stick to 1080.
When recording at the highest bit rate @ 1080 it uses about 120MB per minute, Mid 90MB and low about 30MB. Mid seems to work well for most things, if you were recording fast action, like sports, then recording at the highest rate may have a noticeable difference. Lowest is noticeable poorer and maybe best left to lectures, meetings, teaching, when there is little action and long recording time is wanted.
The biggest problem has been sometimes it gets to be out of focus and stays like that until you bump the zoom in or out. Also the sd card cover pops open easily when your handling the camera, it does not stop recording and the card does not come out, just an annoyance. The menu buttons are spread out to far, but once you have it set up you shouldn't need to use them often.
It does work fairly good indoors and in low light, besides not focusing at times.
Also the menu buttons are spread out a bit more than usual, but once you are done with your settings you wont need to use them much.
