I have wanted to get an IS lens for a while now and in one of my many visits to different web sites, I saw this one for a little over $400 compared to what appears to be the exact same lens for $600+ (even on the same day on the same web site). I've currently use a Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 on a Cannon EOS 30D. The Tamron lens will be the basis of any comparisons. I was quite concerned I might be getting a gray market lens but, to the extent I could research things, it looked like it was genuine white market so I took the plunge. Have only had it for a few days, but thus far, I'm very pleased.
What I've discovered:
1. The box it came in was labeled "Bundle Package. Do not Separate", so the speculation I read on another web site about this originally being a kit lens appears to be correct.
2. I was successful in registering the lens at the Canon web site. Interestingly enough, the lens came with a registration pamphlet that included the URL for registration (www.registercanon.com). Went to this site and couldn't figure out how to register - it appeared to be site full of advertising links but despite exploring for close to 20 minutes, couldn't figure out how to register. Googled the URL for Canon and was quickly able to register.
3. Tamron macro mode will let you get as close as .95M while limit with Canon lens is 1.5M. Maybe not a huge difference, but something I noticed initially.
4. The IS capability was impressive. The claims that you can get 3 - 4 stops of lower hand hold shutter speeds appear to be accurate. I've done a number of side by side trials swapping between the 2 lenses and the visual differences are readily visible.
5. Although this may be a manifestation of my desire to justify my purchase, the optical quality (IS non-withstanding) of the Canon lens appears to be better.
6. At the 300mm setting, the Canon lens is about 1" longer.
7. The Canon is about 1/3 heaver - 644g vs. 480g. Might be an issue after a full day of shooting - time will tell.
8. The autofocus on the Canon was noticeably quieter. Good for someone like me that does a good bit of nature photography.
In conclusion, my initial impressions are very positive and I'm still scratching my head over why someone would pay $200 more. Hope I don't find a hidden reason months down the road.

This is my second purchase of this lens (after a thief snagged my Canon T3i with this lens attached in a car break-in). I consider this essential equipment for my camera to replace the kit lens sold without IS. I use it specifically to shoot wildlife - especially for birding - and my hands are no longer steady enough for consistent clean shots at the highest zoom. the IS/USM makes all the difference.
